Healthy gum tissue is essential for holding our teeth firmly in place. Without healthy gums, we can develop several health problems, including cardiovascular disease. Preventing and treating periodontal disease and helping you achieve excellent dental health is our mission. Please get in touch with our dental office today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Richard Mancuso at Carrollwood Village Dental.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the gum tissue's inflammation, making it tender and sore. Untreated gum inflammation can morph into periodontitis, the advanced stage of gum disease. With periodontal disease, the gums recede and loosen the teeth from their foundation. As a result, tooth loss and bone loss can occur. Uncontrolled gum disease can also lead to infection, stroke, heart disease, lung conditions, diabetes, and other health conditions.

Signs You Might Have Gum Disease

There are many signs and symptoms of gingivitis and gum disease:

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Dark, dusky, or red gum tissue
  • Swollen or sore gum tissue
  • Gum recession
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in your bite (how your teeth come together)
  • Pus or bumps between teeth and gums

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease can occur due to any of the following:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking and tobacco use
  • Medications
  • Genetics
  • Illness or a compromised immune system
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause)

Routine checkups with your dentist will help reduce your risk of gum disease.

How Can I Prevent Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease has different stages of severity. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and can be reversed with exceptional oral hygiene and deep dental cleanings. Practicing excellent oral hygiene habits can help resolve gingivitis and prevent the condition from progressing. Eating a balanced diet and managing stress help keep gum disease at bay.
